Editorial standards
Accuracy, sourcing, corrections, independence and the use of AI.

Accuracy
We aim to establish material facts before publication and distinguish what is known from what remains uncertain. A forecast is not a result, a proposed transaction is not a completed deal, and a company claim is not independent verification. Headlines must reflect the evidence in the article.
Sources and attribution
We prioritise primary sources: regulatory filings, company disclosures, official statistics, court documents and original research. When reporting relies on another publication, we identify it. Source notes should make the basis of material claims traceable. We do not imply that we conducted interviews or attended events when we did not.
News, analysis and research
NEWS explains what happened. ANALYSIS examines why it matters. THE BIG READ explores a structural change in greater depth. INTELLIGENCE organises data and company or market context. PROFILE focuses on an individual. Interpretation is labelled and should remain distinguishable from documented facts.
Corrections and responses
To request a correction, provide the article URL, the disputed statement and supporting evidence through our Contact page. Material factual corrections should include a dated note explaining what changed; the original publication date remains visible. An updated date identifies a substantive revision, not a way to make old reporting appear new. Typographical changes that do not alter meaning may be made without a separate note.
Request a correctionConflicts of interest
Ownership, investment interests, personal relationships or commercial arrangements that could materially affect the perception of a story should be disclosed. The publisher’s business interests do not remove the need for evidence or fair scrutiny. Coverage is not an endorsement of a company, executive or investment.
Sponsored content and advertising
Commercial content must be clearly labelled as advertising, sponsored content or a paid partnership. A commercial relationship does not guarantee editorial coverage or favourable treatment. Advertising enquiries use the commercial contact route.
Editorial independence
Editorial choices should serve the reader’s understanding of business and economic developments. Sources and advertisers should not receive the right to approve independent editorial coverage. Requests for factual clarification are distinct from control over the final article.
Use of AI
AI may assist with research organisation, drafting, translation and production. The initial analytical articles on this site were produced with AI assistance and carry the MAO Editorial byline. AI output is not itself a source. Factual claims require attributable evidence, and a named byline must reflect actual authorship. We do not use synthetic portraits to represent real people or generated scenes as documentary photographs.
Anonymous sourcing
Anonymity should be exceptional, supported by a clear public-interest reason and knowledge of the source’s identity and basis for the information. Where it is used, the article should explain why anonymity was granted without compromising the source. Unverified allegations are not a substitute for reporting.
Data methodology
Country indicators identify the source, observation year and retrieval date. The initial country comparison uses World Bank 2024 population and nominal GDP in current US dollars; it is a comparable historical snapshot, not a live estimate. National and international series may differ and be revised. Country coverage themes are editorial selections, not rankings of sector size.
Transaction methodology
The Deal Tracker is a selected record of disclosed transactions, not a comprehensive measure of African investment. Dates refer to announcements or disclosures; status is recorded as of the stated source date. Proposed amounts, cumulative rounds and co-investment envelopes are distinguished. Undisclosed amounts stay undisclosed. Sorting by amount compares only the selected currency, without an assumed exchange rate.
Market data and audience rankings
Our market reference is a manually compiled, dated snapshot of published observations. Values are rounded and labelled indicative, with an instrument, unit, observation date and source. They are not live quotes or forecasts and do not update automatically. We do not simulate price movements. Most Read rankings remain unavailable until reliable audience data is connected.
